Stan Hywet Hall in Akron Ohio was built in 1915 by the Seiberling family. Touring the 65,000 square foot home I was struck by the attention to detail. Intricately carved wood, stone floors, and arched doorways grace the interior. Gertrude Seiberling asked the mason to chisel grooves in the new stone floors for a worn appearance. She also allowed her youngest child to ride a motorcycle up and down the hallway.

Great tour. I can't imagine trying to clean a 65,000sq ft. manse though! As for riding a motorcycle down the hall, what an understanding mom....

I love that birch allee!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous...what a beautiful treat!! Thankyou for sharing such magic!
ReplyDeleteIt was being encouraged to ride a motorbike indoors and the birch allee which struck me too. But isn't the path going out into the sea wonderful too! Sea? Is that a lake? A lake! That's amazing! This is the revelation of the day for me. Possibly of the year. You can't see the other side!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for 2010.

I love the fanciful architectural styles of the turn of the century and into the 20s. Some castle elements, country cottage worked in at places, make it look old and worn, but impressive! Very impressive!
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing me!
Stunning pictures, I'd love to walk down the allee. Happy New Year! :)
ReplyDeleteI love seeing this magnificent place through your eyes RS. You guide us through a lovely light filled Birch allee, reveal a golden day from within looking out from a fortress casing of stone, as you tell us of the quarry nearby. I love the mysterious half shadowed portal and the solitary tree standing firm towards what must be a worthy opponent when forceful. Then we stand with you on an amazing jetty gazing out at the merciless body of Erie! I cannot look at another image for awhile now. Your post has stimulated such juxtaposition of thought. The contrast and tension from walking down the illuminated path through the magical Birch allee to that of the dark rather gloomy and frightening (I am most likely reading too much into this ... but that is the beauty of art! Which is what this post is.) coal gray jetty ... I think it is quite brilliant. Your photography hauntingly beautiful. May all the very best come to you in this New Year. Happy 2010! Carol
ReplyDeleteP. S. I am so happy to have found your blog! Best Wishes, Carol
ReplyDeleteGreat architecture, majestic lake, enchanted woods... Thank you Lynn for taking us on the tour. Have a Healthy and Happy 2010!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures.... That walkway through leafless tree is such a beauty! ~bangchik
ReplyDeleteOn a road trip back from NY we toured the Manor and gardens. I remember it well. It was in the fall and I had never seen a perennial anemone. They were pink and white. I came home and ordered some, which quickly died in my South Dakota climate. Thanks for a jog of a nice memory.
ReplyDeleteAwesome photos. I love the tree by the lake and the birches.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit late seeing this post, but I am glad I did! I really like the birch alee! Wonderful photos!
